Why WAS my background black?

I've always loved to cook. I grew up watching every episode of The Galloping Gourmet, then graduated to Julia Child and Jeff Smith. Of course, being a boy growing up in a somewhat traditional 1960's household, I was only rarely and reluctantly allowed to express my creative bent in the kitchen... with mixed results, too, since I was learning. However, I persevered and eventually grew up and moved away and got a kitchen of my own. These days when I return home to visit my mother she's only too glad to let me take over her kitchen and prepare wonderful meals for her, and she's kicking herself for not having encouraged me sooner 8-)
